life on other planets

i love when real life starts feeling like a sci-fi novel.

i was on the way into work this morning and i heard about this planet, called GJ 667Cc that's located just 22-light years away Earth that might be able to support life. so cool! the planet's solar system is pretty different from ours, and so the author of the study was surprised to find planets there, much less a planet that could be habitable. you should definitely read about it if you get a chance.

so i was in my car musing a bit more about it before running into a training session. (yes, this is what i think about while parking. nerd!) i couldn't help but be struck at just how miraculous life is--even the possibility of life. the precision and delicacy of it ... all the conditions having to be just so... it's really baffling when you take a moment to pause and consider.

though i have to confess... more often than not, i take the mystery for granted. i don't think about it much when i see a bird in flight. and in most instances i don't start waxing poetic about how each of my own inhales and exhales are tiny little miracles. but, sometimes it really blows my mind! i am a being with intention and movement and energy and action. this is absolutely amazing stuff.

and so... i hope never to become so practical that i completely forget about beauty and mystery.

and i pray that as a society, we wouldn't close our minds to the opportunities to rejoice about life--even potential life--all around us. in a nearby wood. in a womb of a worried mother.

it's worth 22-light years of travel to find, after all.

and deep down we all value it as sacred.
